Hawthorne and Morningside
The Jack Esplen Oval at Hawthorne is a key part of our local community's sporting scene. It's the home of the Morningside Panthers, and is used by local schools like Lourdes Hill College, and others.
The Siders are one of Queensland's leading local AFL clubs, in both senior and junior competitions. The last few years has seen the club steadily build on its participation levels through excellent development programs. They have a renewed focus on women's AFL, and their partnership with Lourdes is a part of that.
The strong growth rates confirm the club's strong development plan and ongoing potential for men and women players. But the back oval is terribly underused because it needs more investment to bring it up to scratch, and the lights towers need a complete overhaul. The club is campaigning hard for a federal funding contribution to the work that needs to be done.
Giffin Park, home to the Coorparoo Roos AFL Club, is one of the most used AFL facilities in Queensland, with both ovals used year round by sporting clubs, nearby Coorparoo Secondary College, and the community. With population growth on the Southside, the Club expects their membership will quadruple over the next ten years.
That's why I'm calling on the Federal Government to provide funding to the Coorparoo Roos so they can upgrade their fields to make room for expansion and future proof Southsiders' active lifestyles.
I am proud to have announced that if we're elected to government, Labor will commit $450,000 to upgrading facilities at the ground. Will you join with me on calling on the government to match that commitment?
Whites Hill Reserve
Holland Park Junior Cricket Club at Whites Hill Reserve does such a great job encouraging local families to stay active, but they need our support. To fight for better amenities, I need to show that our community supports the HPJCC proposed female & unisex new change rooms being built. Let’s work together, let’s get a commitment for funding. If you would sign my petition, we can show that locals support this important upgrade.
I was very happy to help deliver a grant for another fantastic club at the reserve, Holland Park Hawks. The Hawks were able to secure more than $100,000 for lighting. Find out more on the club's page.
I was able to help the Mayfield Marlins and Mayfield State School with a Stronger Communities grant to get solar panels onto the grandstand at the pool. This important project helps heat the pool so swim carnivals can run into the early evening, and so the pool can be used for more of the year.
