Community Kitchen Upgrade

Our basketball association plays a vital role in supporting the communities’ health through physical activity and social connection and our facility is a major hub for wider community use with over 25 clubs, schools and community based programs undertaking activities on site each week Sports clubs are well placed to support children and the community make healthy choices. There is an increased demand for healthy food and drink options, particularly in environments that promote an active lifestyle like our basketball club. The benefits of an upgraded kitchen to allow us to provide healthy choices to our club include, but are not limited to:

  • Increase performance of our club (healthy players equals better performance);
  • Our basketball association will exemplify consistency about healthy eating and healthy lifestyles by providing quality healthy food and snack options;
  • Create a family-friendly environment that encourages health;
  • Food service better aligns with overall health messages in sports clubs;
  • Increased sponsorship and funding opportunities for the club which will be reinvested into programs and services for youth;
  • The ability to undertake catered functions at the facility, which is something that many school and club partners have requested but we have been unable to undertake with the present kitchen;
  • Improvements in health and safety for volunteers and reduced injury risks;
  • The ability for the facility to be compliant with the requirements of hosting events for our sport, increasing the amount of people coming on site; and
  • A better ability to cater for community members with dietary requirements who we are presently unable to cater for effectively.

Southern Districts Basketball will conduct a major upgrade of our kitchen which will allow us to not only expand the range of services and food and drink options that we can offer clubs, schools and community users who access our site, but also ensure we can meet the needed food preparation requirements, including temperature control, food handler safety and hygiene and operational sanitation. The project will involve:

  • Deep cleaning and painting of the internal walls of the kitchen;
  • Installation of new cooking equipment including air fryers, steamers, microwave and a fan forced oven;
  • Installation of refrigerated cabinets to keep salads and healthy sandwiches at correct temperatures once prepared;
  • Construction of an expanded cleaning area, stainless steel food preparation area and new hand washing facilities;
  • Installation of a new warming cabinet for healthy hot food options;
  • Expansion of food preparation area;
  • Shelving inside the cold room for proper storage of fruits and vegetables; and
  • Building additional “easy clean” storage cabinets and cupboards to increase kitchen capacity.
